damned if you do, damned if you dont, i guess...

New Yorkers are now suspect of reusable grocery bags, for reasons that apparently hit home more than those that might have discouraged plastic bag use....

We know plastic bags will probably never biodegrade, sit in landfills, account for an absurd percentage of New York's waste, and eventually all make their way out to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, but we still cant help ourselves when the checker hands it over the counter.  That has begun to change over the last few years amongst conscious shoppers and retailers, yet the ubiquity of plastic still abounds, especially with as much eating-on-the-run as we are all guilty of. The success of reusable totes like EnviroSax, that roll up into a no-excuses sized little ball, suggests that this trend is taking hold, at least for those with a spare $9-25 and a desire to be (or at least look) proactive in all this.

BUT NOW... even our beloved reusable bags are under attack. Lead? Bacteria? Oh my. Now that we could potentially be bringing the likes of lead and bacteria into the home, we have a bigger problem on our hands. Or do we? The New York Times seems to think so, considering this made front page this morning. In a place where we are bound to come into contact with those things daily, why declare a bag scare? Two steps forward, one step back.
